WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is once again calling on the Liberal premier of Yukon to put the interests of Yukoners first and set aside his loyalty to Justin Trudeau by joining those calling for an end to the costly carbon tax.
BC Premier David Eby announced on Thursday, September 12, that a re-elected NDP government in BC would scrap the carbon tax on consumers. This means that Liberal Premier Ranj Pillai is the only remaining Canadian premier who supports the Trudeau carbon tax.
“Ranj Pillai now stands alone in Canada as the only remaining Canadian premier that supports the Trudeau carbon tax,” said Leader of the Official Opposition, Currie Dixon. “It’s now time for Ranj Pillai to set aside his loyalty to Justin Trudeau and do what is right for Yukoners – end the costly carbon tax.”
Not only does Ranj Pillai continue to support the Trudeau carbon tax, but he has also criticized the federal government for introducing exceptions to the carbon tax for home heating oil. Around half of Yukoners heat their homes with home heating oil and have benefitted from this as an exception. Less than a year ago the Liberal premier told national media that he was disappointed in the exceptions introduced by the federal government.
“Yukoners are overwhelmed with the high cost of living, and the carbon tax is placing an additional burden on struggling families and small businesses,” added Dixon. “It’s time for Yukoners to have a premier that represents their interests and is not bound by blind loyalty to his federal Leader.”
