Yukon RCMP Confirm Downtown Whitehorse Crime Wave

WHITEHORSE – Recent statistics from the Whitehorse RCMP confirm that the Liberal Government can no longer continue to ignore the issue of property crime that is sweeping through downtown Whitehorse.

The August 13, 2024, RCMP news release confirms that there have been a raft of break-ins targeting small businesses, as well as general thefts, motor vehicle thefts, and bicycle thefts. Police said that ‘over half of the total police calls for service occurred in the downtown area.’

“The Liberal Government cannot continue to ignore this growing trend of break-ins and property crime that have targeted small businesses and residents in the downtown core,” said MLA Geraldine Van Bibber, the Yukon Party Official Opposition critic for small business. “We are reiterating our call for the Liberal Government to properly resource the RCMP and to identify property crime and downtown safety as a priority for the Yukon RCMP.”

Earlier this month the Yukon Party Official Opposition called for the Minister of Justice to add combatting property crime and ensuring downtown safety to the list of policing priorities.
