Yukon Party Urges Government to Buy Local

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition suggests that the Yukon government do more to purchase local products and services from Yukoners in the private sector. With the uncertainty in North America, Yukon Party MLAs pitched several ways the government can support Yukon businesses and secure the territory’s economic future.

In the Legislative Assembly, Yukon Party MLAs called on the government to purchase more products from local farmers and food producers to use in government facilities such as care homes and health facilities. We also encouraged the government to dedicate sufficient budgets to local media and publishing outlets instead of American tech giants such as Google and Meta. In addition, the Yukon Party suggested the government make it easier for Yukon manufacturers of wood products to access Yukon timber.

The Premier indicated that Canada plans to remove internal trade barriers by July 1 this year. We highlighted the need to remove trade barriers for local agriculture, particularly Yukon egg producers, who need access to more markets to scale up production for economic viability. We asked if the personal-use exemption limits on alcohol purchased in other provinces would be removed by July 1. And we also pushed for pan-Canadian licensure for doctors by July 1 to help labour mobility in healthcare.

We brought up ways to support Yukon businesses by reducing the red tape burden the Yukon Government currently puts on the private sector. We urged that the government form a Red Tape Reduction Strategy, look at ways to streamline processes, and adopt a 1-for-1 regulatory rule, to limit regulatory creep.

“The economic challenges are shifting quickly, and we need to be poised to respond,” said Leader Currie Dixon. “We feel that these and other measures can help Yukon's economy and businesses be prepared for anything that comes their way. I encourage all Yukoners to Buy Local and support our private sector.”
