WHITEHORSE – On March 16, the Yukon Party Official Opposition introduced a motion in the Legislative Assembly urging the Yukon government to support relief efforts for those affected by the major earthquake in Türkiye and Syria on February 6.
The motion read as follows:
THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to support the Yukon Muslim Society Inc.’s campaign to help individuals impacted by the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria by donating to the Red Cross.
On Friday, the Yukon government announced a $25,000 donation to Yukon Cares to support the resettlement of those Turkish and Syrian residents affected by the earthquake. Yukon Cares is a group that helps refugee families settle in the Yukon.
“I would like to thank the Yukon government for making this donation as suggested by my March 16 motion,” said Leader Currie Dixon. “I am also pleased to see the government set up a support desk much like the Ukraine Support Desk and to prioritize Yukon Nominee Program applications from Türkiye and Syria. The recovery effort is ongoing, and I know these moves will help displaced residents who choose to make the Yukon their new home.”
