Yukon Party Supports Implementation Plan for Yukon’s MMIWG2S+ Strategy

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition would like to commend the Yukon government and everyone involved with the development and the release of the Implementation Plan for Changing the Story to Upholding Dignity and Justice: Yukon’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ People Strategy. The Yukon Advisory Committee on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit+ People released the 48-page strategy on June 6.

This document is the culmination of work started by the committee in 2015. The committee then made significant contributions to the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The strategy developed and released in 2020 is a ‘Made in Yukon’ approach to addressing violence against Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people in the territory. The strategy’s implementation plan provides a clear direction with priority action items, timelines, and benchmarks to create a pathway and eradicate this violence.

The Yukon Party was especially pleased to see the involvement of Indigenous women’s organizations, First Nations governments, families and survivors reflected in the priorities and action items.

“I would like to thank the three co-chairs of the Advisory Committee for taking on this difficult task,” said Leader Currie Dixon. “The Yukon government, led by the Minister of the Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean as a co-chair, have helped facilitate a thorough plan to implement the Yukon’s MMIW2S+ strategy. At a time when there are questions about the national response to the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, this implementation plan shows once again that the Yukon is leading the way when it comes to responding to issues of local and national importance.”

“We look forward to seeing these tangible actions carried out in the years ahead,” Dixon added.
