Yukon Party Stands Up For Municipalities To Ensure Adequate Funding

WHITEHORSE – On Wednesday the Yukon Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a Yukon Party Official Opposition motion regarding the Comprehensive Municipal Grant.

The Motion, originally introduced by Watson Lake MLA Patti McLeod on November 8, 2023, reads as follows:

THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to ensure the financial and long-term sustainability of Yukon communities by amending the comprehensive municipal grant in response to the analysis and report conducted by the Association of Yukon Communities in July 2023.

The motion aimed to address the disproportionate growth in costs for Yukon municipalities that were identified by a third-party review and raised by the Association of Yukon Communities. McLeod’s work garnered rare support from all three parties.

“The Association of Yukon Communities have been expressing on behalf of municipalities their need to revamp the Comprehensive Municipal Grant for some time,” said McLeod. “I am happy that my colleagues in the Legislative Assembly agreed and voted for the motion. It’s now up to the Liberal government to follow through with the AYC and municipalities.”
