Yukon Party Commits to Reevaluate EWES Relocation

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party is committed to addressing a major error committed by the Liberal government: the lack of consultation on, and poor location for, the École Whitehorse Elementary School (EWES) replacement project. The Liberals’ lack of consultation and selection process was enabled by the territorial NDP, which did not prioritize school planning in their coalition Confidence and Supply Agreement (CASA).

The Yukon Party is calling on the Liberal government to hold off awarding any contracts regarding the construction of a new EWES until after the 2025 territorial election so that a new responsible government can conduct an appropriate consultation process.

“On the eve of an election, this major project should be shelved until a new government can appropriately hear from Yukoners on other options the community supports,” said Leader Currie Dixon. “As long as there are no contracts in place, the Yukon Party will look at alternatives. Likewise, this project is in the NDP leader’s riding, so we found it surprising that she didn’t include it in any of her CASA agreements and instead supported the government as they moved forward without adequate consultation with Takhini residents.”

In 2022, the Liberal government announced that they were building a new EWES in Takhini. This prompted many community groups and residents to step forward and highlight several concerns, including the loss of two softball diamonds and increased traffic congestion.

The territorial election must be called on or before November 3, 2025. To learn more about the Yukon Party and how to support its efforts for change, please visit yukonparty.ca.
