Yukon Party Caucus Motions Address Northern Way of Life

WHITEHORSE – On Wednesday, April 22, the Yukon Legislative Assembly unanimously passed three Yukon Party Caucus motions that highlight the realities of living North of 60.

Two motions – Motion 131 and Motion 110 – were introduced by Southern Lakes MLA Tyler Porter and read as follows:

               THAT this House urges the Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture to write and make public a letter to the e-commerce platform Etsy that communicates that:

(1) sustainable trapping, conducted using modern, humane methods is an evidence-based wildlife management practice;

(2) fur harvesting and craftsmanship are part of the rich cultural heritage of Yukon First Nations; and

(3) bans on fur products cause harm to Yukon trappers and artisans who rely on this vital source of income.

And

THAT this House urges the Government of Canada to enhance safety and reliability in severe cold weather conditions by exempting diesel equipment operators in Yukon from diesel exhaust fluid sensor requirements.

Motion 127 was introduced by Watson Lake-Ross River-Faro MLA Patti McLeod and reads as follows:

THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to examine residential propane contract terms to increase consumer choice and protections.

“I regularly hear from constituents in the Southern Lakes and across the territory about the unique realities of living in the North,” said Porter. “I am pleased to have the support of my caucus colleagues in addressing Etsy’s fur product ban and ensuring diesel-powered vehicles remain reliable in extreme northern conditions.”

“I followed the challenges faced by Yukoners who use propane to heat their homes during the December cold snap,” said McLeod. “Yukoners have indicated they would like more choice and protections when it comes to accessing propane during the winter months, and I’m pleased my motion passed so this important issue can be addressed.”
