Yukon Party Calls for Targeted Recruitment of US Health Professionals

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is calling on the Yukon government to capitalize on the current climate and recruit American doctors, nurses, and health professionals to the Yukon. This should include launching a marketing campaign to promote the opportunity for US-trained doctors, nurses, and other health professionals to come North and make the Yukon their home.

Governance by the new US administration has been unpredictable, and many American doctors and nurses have expressed an interest in leaving the country.

The Yukon Party is urging the government to take steps to quickly allow US board-certified doctors, surgeons, and specialists to practice in the Yukon and work with the Yukon Registered Nurses Association to speed up the licensing of US-trained nurses to encourage them to come to the Yukon.

This is an opportunity to capitalize on the unpredictability happening south of the border and fill in gaps in our health care system.

“Given the shortages of health care professionals in Whitehorse and rural Yukon and a long wait list for Yukoners to see a doctor, right now is a prime opportunity to promote what the Yukon offers in the hopes of attracting and retaining more doctors and nurses to the territory,” said Health Critic Brad Cathers. “There has long been a call to recruit more health professionals to our territory. Nova Scotia has already started allowing US board-certified doctors and surgeons to practice without delay, and we believe we can do the same in the Yukon.”

The Yukon Party Official Opposition has previously urged the Yukon Government to follow the lead of other provinces that have allowed doctors and surgeons trained in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand to practice without delay, and sped up the licensing of nurses from a short list of countries with high standards of training.
