With Water Rising, Yukon Government Update Needed

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is requesting the Yukon Government provide a public flood update. The request comes after receiving reports from Lake Laberge-area residents that water levels near their residences have risen above 2007 flood levels.

On June 30, a high water advisory was issued for Lake Laberge. The advisory also said that high water levels in the Takhini River and water volumes from the Southern Lakes were resulting in rising water in Lake Laberge. The June 30 update also said if water were to rise at the same rate, levels could be within 65 centimetres of 2021 levels in 10 days.

The Whitehorse-area has experienced several days of rain this week and combined with reports of rising water from residents in the area, an update is needed for both Lake Laberge residents, and those in the Southern Lakes.

With the government setting up sandbagging stations at Deep Creek this weekend, the update would also give an indication to residents how prepared they should be for potential flooding.
