“I am happy to see the Yukon government take action following my motion highlighting the need to address the third-party analysis and report assessing the Comprehensive Municipal Grant (CMG) commissioned by the Association of Yukon Communities (AYC) in July 2023.
“The report concluded that Yukon communities require a $10,687,645 funding increase to the CMG to make municipalities whole. It is welcome news that the government is now committing to negotiating an increase.
“Like all Yukoners, municipalities across the territory have struggled with soaring costs, while the CMG remained locked in at unsustainable terms. The study done by the AYC found that, over the last 10 years, the grant grew by 17.5 per cent; meanwhile, inflation grew by 20.8 per cent. Municipalities would be forced to consider property tax increases to maintain existing services without an increase to the CMG.
“I have been pushing the territorial government for the past two years to revisit the CMG, and last fall, initiated debate on a motion asking the government to respond to the report. On May 1, 2024, we completed debate, and all MLAs supported my motion to ensure the financial and long-term sustainability of Yukon communities by amending the CMG.
“Congratulations to the AYC and municipalities for securing this commitment from the Yukon government. I was pleased to bring this issue forward on behalf of the AYC, rural Yukon municipalities, and the City of Whitehorse.
“This work will certainly go a long way toward providing the services our growing territory needs.”
