WHITEHORSE – On December 6th, the Yukon Bureau of Statistics released its latest Labour Force Survey data as of November 2024. That bulletin shows that unemployment in the Yukon has spiked dramatically since November 2023.
According to the Yukon Bureau of Statistics, there were 900 unemployed people in November 2023, and the unemployment rate was 3.6%; in November 2024, the number of unemployed shot up to 1600, and the unemployment rate climbed to 5.9%.
“Despite claims by the territorial Liberal Government to the contrary, the latest data from Statistics Yukon confirms that the territory is facing a very difficult economic situation,” said Economic Development Critic Geraldine Van Bibber. “The latest data from Stats Yukon shows that in just one year the number of unemployed Yukoners has spiked by almost 78%.”
Throughout the Fall Sitting of the Yukon Legislative Assembly, the Liberal Government continued to assert that the economy was “raging” and was “very strong,” despite mounting evidence to the contrary. The Fiscal and Economic Update tabled by the Liberal Government in October showed that the Department of Finance expects that Yukon’s real GDP will shrink by 2.3% in 2024.
