WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is requesting an update from the territorial Liberal government on the condition of the new Nisutlin Bay Bridge, budgeted at over $180 million.
On June 4, 2025, the Minister of Highways and Public Works issued a troubling statement about the largest capital project in Yukon’s history, saying that due to soil conditions, work on the north side of the bridge had been paused, and geotechnical experts were being brought in to investigate. The minister said that timelines could be impacted and gave no indication regarding how much more the problem could cost Yukoners.
Many Yukoners have noted that since halting the project in early June, the government has failed to provide any further information. We are justifiably worried about the potential consequences of the soil conditions on the north side of the bridge, from a cost, time, and safety perspective.
“It’s been 11 weeks since the minister last updated Yukoners on this important project,” said Scott Kent, MLA for Copperbelt South. “This project has been poorly managed by the Liberals from the start. Tendering it without the proper permits in place resulted in a $23.9 million change order, and now this latest problem means work has all but stopped on the site.”
