Managed Alcohol Program Missing in Action

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is calling for the Minister of Health and Social Services to provide an update on the status of the planned Managed Alcohol Program at the former St. Elias Adult Group Home on Hoge Street in Whitehorse.

In January, the Liberal government scrambled to fulfill a Confidence and Supply Agreement (CASA) commitment to establish such a program by kicking adults with cognitive disabilities out of this purpose-built group home so it could be used for this CASA program. The Liberals then promised to establish a Managed Alcohol Program by Spring 2024.

However, it is mid-September, and the Yukon Party Official Opposition understands the former group home remains empty.

“The territorial Liberal government’s decision to evict vulnerable residents from the Adult Group Home to make way for the Managed Alcohol Program was mandated by the NDP and the CASA,” said Health and Social Services Critic Brad Cathers. “Once again, the Liberals pay lip service to another CASA promise but fail to deliver. The St. Elias facility was purpose-built to help adults with cognitive disabilities, and the disruption in the lives of those long-time residents should have been avoided.”

“Instead, the NDP and the Liberals put political optics ahead of vulnerable people with cognitive disabilities while pretending to implement a promise from the CASA. Many months later, that building remains as empty as their promises,” added Cathers.
