Lots of Interest: Building Season Lost, Interest Accrues Due to Liberal Lot Delays

WHITEHORSE – In the spring, the Yukon Party Official Opposition warned the Liberal government they were rushing the release of unfinished lots in Phase 6B of Whistle Bend. However, under the mounting scrutiny from cancellations, delays and missed timelines for lot construction, the Liberals released these lots while construction was still underway.

The lottery package for prospective buyers made a specific note that the lots would be ready for housing construction ‘by early Summer 2023’. However, purchasers were only able to gain access to the lots in mid-October – missing an entire Yukon-building season.

In addition to lack of access to their lots and losing one year of their three-year building commitment as per the land lottery agreement, owners paid interest on these empty lots for months. These costs will simply be passed on to homebuyers and drive up the cost of those houses.

“We are in a housing crisis, and Yukoners should not bear the brunt of Liberal government’s mismanagement and barriers that delay getting much needed homes to market,” said Yukon Party Housing Critic and Porter Creek Centre MLA Yvonne Clarke. “The Yukon Party is calling on the Liberal government to waive the interest payments for lots while purchasers did not have access to their lots. Furthermore, the Yukon Party is urging the Liberal government to work with those who purchased the lots to accommodate the loss of a construction season by amending building timeline requirements.”
