WHITEHORSE – A motion from the Yukon Party Official Opposition to urge the Liberal government to consult on the location of a new École Whitehorse Elementary School has passed the Legislative Assembly.
All Yukon Party and NDP MLAs supported the motion. All Liberal MLAs voted against considering different locations through a consultation process.
The motion, brought forward by Leader Currie Dixon, reads as follows:
THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to launch a formal process to consider alternative locations for the replacement of École Whitehorse Elementary School.
“Since the Liberals announced their decision to build a new Whitehorse Elementary in Takhini, we have heard from neighbourhood residents and community groups who had serious concerns with the location,” said Dixon. “We are happy the motion passed the Legislative Assembly. It’s now up to the Liberal government to respect the will of the Assembly and do what they should have done in the first place: consult on the location of a new Whitehorse Elementary School.”
