WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is challenging the Liberal government to not tender any contract to build the new Ecole Whitehorse Elementary School on the Takhini Educational Land Reserve before next year’s territorial election. The Liberals lack a mandate from Yukon voters to finalize their decision, and they should not lock taxpayers into that financial obligation.
During question period on Tuesday, October 8, Leader Currie Dixon asked the Minister of Education to hold off on issuing a tender for the proposed construction of the new school to be built on the northwest corner of the land reserve. There have been numerous concerns expressed by Takhini-area residents regarding increased traffic flow and the loss of green space, and Softball Yukon is concerned about the loss of two diamonds.
In the two weeks since the department released the document that showed the government’s final decision, Yukon Party MLAs have heard from several groups that have concerns that their input was either misrepresented, as is the case with the Takhini Neighbourhood Association, or left out altogether, as with Softball Yukon.
“There is only one group that thinks building the biggest elementary school in the Yukon in the backyard of another elementary school, on one of Whitehorse’s most congested streets, on top of the fields that support the biggest and most popular summer sport in the Yukon, is a good idea, and that is the Liberals,” said Dixon. “The concerns of stakeholders must be addressed before tens of millions of dollars are committed to this project. If the Liberals award a contract for the construction of this school, it will tie the hands of a future government.”
