Liberals and NDP Plunge Yukoners Further into Debt on Eve of Election

WHITEHORSE – Just days before the deadline for calling the 2025 territorial election, the territorial Liberals announced they have borrowed a record-shattering $200 million in new debt. This unprecedented borrowing adds to the financial mess for the next government to clean up, and worse, ties the hands of a future government by running up the debt by hundreds of millions of dollars plus interest.

In the spring, the NDP supported the Liberal plan to increase total debt to $774 million by the end of the fiscal year, despite neither party having a mandate from Yukoners to burden the next generation of taxpayers with their spending spree. In two terms, the Liberals and their NDP partners will have quadrupled the territory’s debt.

“With Yukoners set to head to the polls soon, the departing Liberal Cabinet has no mandate to make major decisions, let alone financial decisions that will impact the territory’s finances for the next decade,” said Lake Laberge MLA Brad Cathers. “The out-of-control spending by the Liberal-NDP partnership will have negative long-term consequences for future generations. Only a Yukon Party government will make sound, stable, and responsible financial decisions to support Yukoners and their families.”

In return for their support of the Liberal government over the past four years, the NDP Caucus received over $1 million in unprecedented funding. The minority Liberal government, led by an unelected Premier, has no democratic mandate.
