WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is expressing deep concern about the impact of Liberal cuts to the budget of Elections Yukon that could impact the conduct of the 2025 territorial election.
In a recent letter to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Electoral Officer raised significant and startling concerns about what the decisions of the Liberal government would mean for its ability to conduct an election in 2025.
The Chief Electoral Officer's letter dated December 11, 2024, states:
“I am concerned that Elections Yukon is not being given the support and tools it needs to do its job. I am not prepared to put Elections Yukon in an underfunded position and accept a level of risk prejudicial to readiness and the conduct of the next election.”
The letter from the Chief Electoral Officer makes it clear that he is worried that Elections Yukon may not be ready for an election in 2025 due to the lack of funding.
“This is completely unacceptable. The Liberal government cannot use budget cuts to undermine Elections Yukon and possibly deny Yukoners a free and fair election,” said Brad Cathers, Yukon Party critic for Democratic Institutions. “While the Liberals’ frivolous spending and poor budgetary management have put the Yukon’s public finances in a dire situation, one area that must not be cut is the funding to conduct an election.”
The Yukon Party Official Opposition is calling on the Liberal government to provide Elections Yukon with the necessary funding to ensure that a territorial election can be held in 2025 and end their unlawful political interference in the budgets of the independent officers of the Legislative Assembly.
