Hope For Change Springs to Life as the Assembly Comes to a Close

WHITEHORSE – During the 32-day Spring sitting of the Yukon Legislative Assembly, it became clear that Yukoners’ desire for change will require a change in government. There will be an election before the Assembly convenes again, so Yukon Party MLAs challenged the Liberal government’s approach on key issues facing the Yukon, including the current direction of our strained health care system, the outrageous and ignored crime wave facing our communities, and the Liberal decisions that have stalled and increased costs on housing and lot development.

In addition, the Yukon Bureau of Statistics released economic stats on the final day of the sitting. Those statistics painted a grim picture of the Yukon’s economy, as Yukon’s GDP dropped 3.3 per cent in 2024; the worst in the country. Yukon Party MLAs have been sounding the alarm about the Liberals’ reckless approach to our economy, and we are now faced with an economic downturn and hundreds of millions of dollars of net debt.

On behalf of rural Yukoners, the Yukon Party continued to raise serious concerns about the alarming reduction of services in rural communities, the growing challenges in our education system, the lack of maintenance on Yukon’s roads, and the permitting logjam. MLAs also questioned the complete failure of the Liberals’ energy strategy. The new plan abandons millions of dollars spent and pivots to hundreds of millions of investment in new diesel electricity generation.

One motion put forward by Yukon Party MLAs passed the Legislative Assembly. It summoned representatives of PwC to attend as witnesses and answer questions about the $220 million total that they have requested from the Yukon to clean up and sell the Eagle Gold Mine. We strongly believed that such a major expenditure required scrutiny and were disappointed the Liberals’ hand-picked receiver refused to appear until they were ordered to do so by a court in Ontario.

The Yukon Party Official Opposition expressed no confidence in the territorial Liberal government by voting against the 2025-2026 Budget on behalf of the thousands of Yukoners who want an election.

“Yukoners are clearly frustrated with the policies of the territorial Liberals and NDP,” said Leader Currie Dixon. “The Yukon Party is now the only option for change in the Yukon. My team will be ready to provide Yukoners with that alternative and form the next Yukon Government for the benefit of everyone.”

Yukon Party MLAs will now head back to their ridings to connect with Yukoners in preparation for the election that must be called in 2025.
