Highway Rest Stop Closures a Concern for Yukoners and Tourists

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon Party Official Opposition is questioning the reductions in facilities along Yukon’s highway system this summer. We are asking the Liberal government to clarify for Yukoners and the tourism industry why they decided to close many washrooms at rest stops. Instead of supporting travelers, the Liberals are reducing services outside of Whitehorse.

Yukoners and visitors travelling the highways have noticed these washrooms have been inaccessible. Some have not only had closed signs placed right on the outhouses, but concrete barriers blocking the door from opening.

“Rest stops provide the most basic of comforts for those travelling our highways – a place to pull over and rest, as well as to use washroom facilities if needed,” said Tourism and Culture Critic Geraldine Van Bibber. “The fact that many of these rest areas have washrooms that are closed is unacceptable. This is not a good look for anyone travelling our highways, as inaccessible washrooms can have an impact on travellers and their perception of their welcome to the Yukon.”

These closures continue the disregard the territorial Liberals are showing to our Yukon highway system, which has multiple roads in poor repair. It also continues the concerning trend of service cuts in rural Yukon, where the Liberal government is already planning to close landfills in several unincorporated communities and has closed multiple community health centres for extended periods this summer.
