Focus on Trades Training

A Yukon Party government will prioritize how fundamental the skilled trades – and all those who work in them - are to a strong, diversified economy and a positive social reality throughout the territory.

Skilled trades can lead to exciting educational pathways, rewarding careers and can instill entrepreneurship and personal and professional pride.

The Yukon Party will support and promote the skilled trades by:

• Examining opportunities for Expanding Apprenticeships to other careers and occupations and identifying how to promote apprenticeship education as a valuable alternative to a degree program.
• Considering the development of a Skills Development Fund with Yukon First Nations, labour unions and industry and employer organizations to help Yukon workers gain in-demand skills and practical hands-on experience; modelled on Ontario’s successful program.
• Developing hands-on programs to Connect Students with Local Industries to foster pride in practical skills and entrepreneurship.
• Building on the success of the Union Training and Innovation Program, led by the Government of Canada, and exploring how to further support apprenticeship training, innovation and partnerships in the Red Seal trades.
• Exploring opportunities to expand the Student Training and Employment Program to secondary students in the skilled trades.

The Yukon Party will also support rural communities and the skilled trades by:

• Launching a robust Recruitment Campaign to attract skilled trades professionals (along with teachers and health care workers) to rural Yukon and offering incentives for them to establish roots and access education and health care locally.
