WHITEHORSE – Renowned First Nations leader Doris Anderson has announced her intention to seek the Yukon Party nomination for Porter Creek North in the 2025 territorial election which must take place on, or before, November 3.
Anderson brings a significant background advocating for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit+ (MMIWG2S+) people both in the Yukon and at the national level. She has served as president of the Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Council, Vice-Chair of the Assembly of First Nations Women’s Council, and in executive positions with the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council.
“I support Currie Dixon in his vision for the Yukon,” said Anderson. “I strongly feel this is where I can contribute and complement the Yukon Party’s efforts, from a good place in a good way with the values and perspectives of someone who belongs to this land and has lived through its passage in history. I can answer this call to serve the Yukon, acknowledging the valuable contributions of those before us and those here to inform our decisions while making space to ensure future generations will have this place to call home.”
The mother of two and grandmother of three was born and raised in Whitehorse. She serves on two school councils and is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, having previously served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. She and her husband, who served in the military for 22 years, lived in Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick before returning to the Yukon.
“I have long considered serving in the Legislative Assembly as another way to represent not only First Nations but all Yukoners,” said Anderson. “The Yukon Party, led by Currie Dixon, shares many of my values, including doing what’s best for Yukoners. I’m excited to seek the nomination and join Currie and his team in forming the next government.”
Geraldine Van Bibber, the current Yukon Party MLA for Porter Creek North, announced earlier this week that she would not seek another term. However, Van Bibber is serving as the party’s 2025 Campaign Chair.
As per the Yukon Party constitution, riding nomination processes and timing, including that for Porter Creek North, will be announced electronically through local media and to party members. Once a nomination opens, it will not close before 14 days of the notice. To learn more about the Yukon Party and how to support its efforts for change, please visit yukonparty.ca
