WHITEHORSE – On November 21, 2019, the Liberal government stated that the budget for the new Whistle Bend School was $32 million.
In July of 2021, Liberal projections for the new school had gone significantly over budget and was now estimated to cost $43 million. This means, in less than two years the budget of the project had skyrocketed.
However, it gets worse.
The Yukon Party Official Opposition has obtained a confidential briefing note dated November 22, 2021 that indicates the school has gone further over budget. The briefing note states, “the total capital requirement for the project is $52.8 million.”
That is $21 million over budget from the original estimates provided by the government.
The briefing note also says construction will now be completed sometime during the 2023-2024 school year. Back in August 2019, the Liberals said the school was supposed to be completed in June 2023.
This Liberal government continue to mismanage procurement, thus costing taxpayer’s money.
