CFIB Gives Yukon Poor Grade in State of Internal Trade Report Card

WHITEHORSE – The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) gives the Yukon a ‘D’ in its annual ‘The State of Internal Trade: Canada’s Interprovincial Cooperation Report Card.’ In their 2024 report card, released in July, the business organization gave the Yukon a grade of 5.9 out of 10, which was the third lowest in Canada.

The CFIB report card highlights federal, provincial, and territorial governments' interprovincial cooperation efforts and provides an overview of the work done to reduce the barriers to internal trade. The Yukon’s grade was dragged down due to reliance on Canadian Free Trade Agreement Exemptions that increase barriers to internal trade and have a significant and broader impact on the overall economy.

“As the Yukon’s economy continues to wane, it is disappointing that the Yukon Government is not doing more to promote trade and create the conditions for the private sector to thrive,” said Geraldine Van Bibber, Yukon Party Critic for Economic Development. “The CFIB report card indicates that there is a lot of red tape for private sector businesses to overcome which is slowing down economic activity. We hope that receiving such a poor grade by this national business organization causes the Liberal government to start taking the needs of our economy more seriously.”

According to the CFIB, improving internal trade would create new employment opportunities, help address labour shortages, foster innovation, and boost economic growth by addressing Canada’s lagging productivity. They also state that removing internal trade barriers would help businesses and consumers benefit from increased choices in goods and services, improved security of supply, and affordability.
