WHITEHORSE – Health care worker and small business owner Aurora Viernes has announced she will seek the Yukon Party nomination for Riverdale South in the 2025 territorial election, which must be held on or before November 3.
Born in the Philippines, Viernes (veer-NESS) moved to the Yukon 30 years ago. For the past 25 years, she has cared for Yukoners as a nursing home attendant with the Yukon Government. In addition, Viernes has owned and operated a janitorial services company since 1998.
Viernes is a leader in the national and territorial Filipino community. She has served as president and vice-president of the Canadian Filipino Association of the Yukon from 2016 to 2024. During that time, Viernes helped establish the Yukon Filipino Fiesta, which celebrates Filipino culture each July, and has also assisted local Filipinos with consular services, including passport applications. She was also one of the founding directors of the not-for-profit Filipino Canadian National Congress that represents the Filipino community across Canada.
“While I have experience helping the Filipino community, I would like to extend that service to Currie Dixon’s Yukon Party team to help the residents of Riverdale and all Yukoners,” said Viernes. “I am hearing from many seniors that they are concerned about the increased cost of living. I also want to support young Yukoners to get ahead and excel.”
As per the Yukon Party constitution, riding nomination processes and timing, including for Riverdale South, will be announced electronically to party members. To learn more about the Yukon Party and how to support its efforts for change, please visit yukonparty.ca.
