Yukon Legislative Assembly Supports Removal of Carbon Tax from Home Heating Fuel

WHITEHORSE – Members of the Yukon Legislative Assembly have passed a motion calling for the removal of the carbon tax from home heating fuel.

The motion, brought forward by Kluane MLA Wade Istchenko, reads as follows:

THAT this House urges the Government of Canada to exempt home heating fuel from the Government of Canada’s carbon-pricing system.

The motion passed with support from all eight Yukon Party MLAs. All Liberal MLAs voted to keep the carbon tax on home heating fuel.

The Yukon Party Official Opposition has repeatedly brought up the inflation crisis during both the spring and fall sitting. One of the items to help address the rising cost of living would be the removal of collecting the carbon tax on home heating fuel.

It will now be up to the Yukon government to follow through on the will of the Legislative Assembly and seek an exemption from the federal Liberal government for collecting the carbon tax on home heating fuel.
