Letter from Geraldine Van Bibber

A letter from Porter Creek North MLA Geraldine Van Bibber regarding Ukrainian refugees.

February 21, 2022
Hon. Ranj Pillai
Minister of Economic Development
P.O. Box 2703
Whitehorse, Yukon Y1A 2C6

Dear Minister Pillai,

I am writing to encourage you to work quickly to engage with the federal government and ensure the Yukon and Yukoners are prepared to welcome any Ukrainian refugees who are relocating to Canada in the coming days and weeks.

Many Yukoners share a close bond with Ukraine and may have family who still live in the country. As Russian aggression towards Ukraine escalates, Canada will be taking action to support those Ukrainians who want to come to our country. It is expected that priority will be given to those seeking entrance into Canada and other immigration applications from Ukraine nationals.

I encourage you to ensure that officials have coordinated the efforts of any local organizations who are seeking to assist those fleeing the conflict.

Likewise, there may even be opportunities for mutual benefit, as earlier this month you announced that the Government of Yukon will be eliminating the red tape for businesses to accept employees under the Yukon Nominee program. Those Ukrainians seeking a new home in Canada may be interested in the opportunities offered by many of our Yukon businesses. I encourage you to work with Yukon businesses and the federal government to facilitate any opportunities.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Geraldine Van Bibber
MLA Porter Creek North
