Lack of Answers on Carbon Tax Creates Uncertainty for Municipal Governments and Businesses

WHITEHORSE – At Whitehorse City Council this week, it was revealed that the Yukon Liberal Government has still not provided information about the carbon tax to municipal governments that will help them plan their own budgets.

The Official Opposition directly raised this issue with the Premier during Question Period on October 31, 2018 – nearly 2 years after the Liberals were elected. At the time the Premier refused to provide any information about how the carbon tax would impact municipalities or how their rebates will work.

Now, two months later, it was revealed at a City Council meeting that the Yukon Liberals are still providing no further information.

“The Premier’s lack of transparency and lack of leadership is making it difficult for municipal governments to plan their own budgets,” said Brad Cathers, Official Opposition Finance Critic. “We are in the third year of this Liberal government and it’s time for the Premier to actually start governing and live up to his commitment to be open and transparent with Yukoners. The Official Opposition is calling on the Liberals to release all the details on the carbon tax scheme and carbon tax rebates by the end of this week.”
