The Yukon Party has announced that if elected, a Yukon Party government would direct the Yukon Energy Corporation (YEC) to cut their planned 34 per cent increase to Yukon power rates.
“We have heard from Yukoners that they simply cannot afford a 34 per cent increase to their power rates,” said Leader Currie Dixon. “We are going to provide clear leadership and direction to Yukon Energy to restructure the expenditure they are planning, and work with them to bring that proposed increase down as much as possible.”
In May 2025, the YEC applied to the Yukon Utilities Board (YUB) seeking a series of increases to Yukoners’ power rates over the next year and a half. If approved, the corporation would spend approximately $350 million over the next three years on a series of system-wide investments to address electricity generation, reliability, and emergency backup.
Under the current proposal submitted to the YUB, Yukon Energy is proposing that ratepayers would entirely pay for the capital investment needed through this 34 per cent increase in rates. This is unsustainable for the thousands of Yukoners who are already struggling with the affordability crisis.

The Yukon Party’s proposal would see the Yukon Government work with YEC to restructure its capital investment and seek alternative sources of funding. This would include a direct capital contribution from the Yukon Government to pay for the basic upgrades needed to keep the system functioning and the lights on. This capital contribution would come in the form of the Yukon Government carrying long-term debt on behalf of the YEC. Additionally, a Yukon Party government would prioritize seeking federal funding to complement this investment, including the current application that YEC has before the Government of Canada.
The Yukon Party also believes that Yukon First Nations can play a more significant role in energy infrastructure in the Yukon and wants to see direct investment from First Nations in new electricity supply projects in their respective traditional territories, including those contemplated in the current YEC application.
