WHITEHORSE – This weekend it was reported by CBC that Skagway is anticipating around a million cruise ship passengers this summer. This represents a huge opportunity for the Yukon tourism
industry and private sector economy, and is a market that the Government of Yukon should be actively courting.
However, despite a million tourists quite literally at Yukon’s doorstep, the CBC also reported that this is not a market that Yukon is actively promoting. This represents a massive missed opportunity for the territory’s tourism industry.
“We should be doing everything in our power to support our tourism industry and attract visitors no matter where they arrived first, so the Liberal government’s strategy to ignore this promising market is short-sighted,” said Stacey Hassard, Leader of the Official Opposition. “In order to increase opportunities for Yukon’s private sector and tourism industry, the Liberals need to recognize the value of these visitors and redouble their efforts to attract them to our beautiful territory.”
This is just the latest misstep that this Liberal government has made when it comes to supporting tourism in the territory. Last week it was revealed that they were cutting funding for the Whitehorse Trolley which will result in the removal of a marquee tourist attraction. Further, last month the Liberals announced that they no longer think the North Alaska Highway benefits Yukoners and as a result they will be reducing its funding for maintenance, even though it is a critical road that facilitates extensive tourism and RV traffic in the territory.
As a result of the Liberal’s neglect of the private sector there has been a loss of 600 private sector jobs during their term in office.
