WHITEHORSE – This week, the Official Opposition tabled a motion
urging the government to include residents in decisions for the new Whistle Bend School through the creation of its own elected school council to be consulted on the project.
The motion, tabled by Official Opposition Education Critic Scott Kent, reads:
THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to make any necessary policy, regulatory or legislative changes to allow for the creation of a Whistle Bend School Council to advise and be consulted on the design, planning, and construction of the new Whistle Bend School.
“School councils ensure the voice of students and their families are represented in decisions affecting their education, so it’s a no-brainer that an elected school council be in place to assist with the planning and construction of the Whistle Bend School,” stated Kent. “As the government is embarking on the planning phase for this new school, proactively establishing a school council now and receiving meaningful input from these families would add significant value in determining the needs of this school and how it will best serve the students and families of Whistle Bend and the surrounding areas.”
