WHITEHORSE – On Wednesday, the Yukon Party Official Opposition brought forward a motion urging the Liberal government to join other jurisdictions across the country in their call for the federal government to reform the bail system for violent and repeat offenders.
The motion was introduced by Leader Currie Dixon in response to declining faith in the justice system and growing sentiment that the current system is broken and no longer keeping communities safe or delivering justice for victims.
The motion reads as follows:
THAT this House urges the Government of Yukon to join calls for the Government of Canada to immediately reform the bail system by eliminating credit for time served in jail for repeat and violent offenders.
Unfortunately, all Liberal and NDP MLAs voted against taking action to address Canada’s broken bail system.
“Everyone sees the media reports, and people continue to tell us that not only have they been affected by property crime and declining public safety, but the situation is getting worse,” said Dixon. “Police have indicated many of these crimes are being committed by repeat offenders and those well known to police. More needs to be done, but the Liberal-NDP coalition continues to drag its feet and protect criminals.”
